Eating out when you’re trying to lose weight

Eating out when you are trying to lose weight can sometimes feel daunting. You don’t want to ruin all the good work you’ve put in the rest of the week and yet you want to be sociable and enjoy your meal out. Eating out should never be something to stress over, with that in mind, here are some tips to enjoy eating out without jeopardising your weight loss journey.

Eat well all day before going out

Don’t let yourself get too hungry. Eat well during the day and do not skip meals. If you starve yourself all day then you are much more likely to binge and over eat, when you’re eating out. By staying balanced and eating well during the day, you are more likely to make healthy choices when eating out.

Take a look at the menu before you go

If you have a look at the menu before you go to the restaurant, you can make a choice that is both healthy and tasty. In general fish or a steak is a good choice. Trying to avoid very rich dishes or ones that are laden with calorie dense carbohydrates, can help you to eat a less calorific meal over all.

Try to avoid sugary or alcoholic drinks

Sugary and alcoholic drinks tend to add unnecessary calories to a meal. Try to choose water with your meal and if you want a glass of wine, have one and enjoy it, but try and stick to one. A good way of not drinking alcohol at all is to drive to the event. With the added responsibility of having the car with you, you won’t drink alcohol, therefore cutting out hundreds of extra calories.

Have a light snack prior to going out if you feel you’re too hungry

Try to eat something small if you feel excessively hungry before going. Just eat something small like a piece of fruit or a yoghurt, just to take the edge off your hunger. That way you won’t order more food than you can eat and feel compelled to eat more than you are able for.

Ask for rich sauces to be served on the side

Have a taste of sauces and enjoy a little but don’t drown your food in them. By asking for sauces and dressing etc on the side, you can put a little on your food without it overpowering the taste of the delicious cut of meat or fish that you have ordered. It also helps to cut back on calories without compromising on flavour.

Just because you are trying to lose weight, doesn’t mean you need to forgo socialising and eating out altogether. With a little careful planning, you can still enjoy your meal and you can make sure you stay on track with your weight loss goals for the week.
